(In) Company classes are curated by Lorea Burge as part of their research within the Rose Choreographic School. Lorea invites artists that inspire and complement their practice to facilitate a class at the start of their working studio day. The classes take place in the studios of Saddlers Wells East. I attended classes with Eve Stainton (21st and 25th March, 16th and 23rd May), with Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome (7th July) and with Steph McMann (8th and 9th of July.)

All classes seemed informed by the choreographers' own work, past or ongoing. They were structured as improvisational classes, around a series of exercises for which there was a lot of time to explore, and to switch roles when working in pairs or trios.

Eve's workshops started with a check-in on how everyone was feeling that morning, which works well for a group that doesn't know each other. Different roles in the exercises played with guiding movement, resonating with movement, picking up residue of movement.

Steph's workshops started with breathing exercises and feeling the body from the inside. The classes worked on the relation between attention and movement, questioning the idea of 'focus' by letting everything through (sensations, thoughts, memories, feelings, observations, associations, ...) and process these through movement, introducing the idea of the 360 body (all around, no hierarchy or frontality.)
